The Colegio Blogporter
is a joint initiative of students and faculty of the
University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez (UPRM).
Our contributors are students enrolled in ENGL 3268: Writing for the Communications Media at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez (El Colegio).
The project was launched in Spring 2009 with a diverse team of novice blogporters who reported on Arts & Entertainment, the Economy, Green Alternatives, Social Issues and the English Department at UPRM. Each semester after that students have continued reporting on a wide variety of topics affecting or involving the University of Puerto Rico community. This Spring (2011) you will be reading from almost fifty new blogporters who will be reporting on current issues affecting Puerto Rican society at large. We will soon be announcing the thematic categories for this semester’s media writing journey.
The course professor and blog editor is Jocelyn A. Géliga Vargas (Ph.D. Communication). After teaching in communication, journalism and cultural studies programs in Massachusetts, New York City and Buenos Aires, she joined the English Department at UPRM in January, 2005.
Though our target audience is our university community, we hope that our blogports will also interest readers elsewhere. We are learning media writing techniques for the first time and, for the vast majority of us, putting them into practice in our second language (English). We want to share this learning experience and our writing with other blogporters and blogreaders.
We look forward to your readership and comments.

I’m very excited to see that Colegio has a blog space like this and that Dr. Geliga is using it as a tool for her media course! It is of great value to provide students with the opportunity to post issues that concern them and the academic community while simultaneously developing their communication skills in their second language. Bravo!

Hello:
I need to contact Leah Greve about this story in March:
http://engl3268.wordpress.com/2011/03/30/cafeteria-confusion/
I am Michael O. Allen, Assistant Communications Director | 32BJ SEIU
http://www.seiu32bj.org. My e-mail address is mallen@seiu32bj.org and phone is 212-388-3805.
We have been following Sodexo very closes and I need to ask Leah a question about this passage in the story:
“But UPRM is not the only client of Sodexo that has received terrible service. There is a long list of institutions complaining about how corrupt the company is.”
Thank you.
Michael
