Briam’s Dream

By:  Guillermo Gumieny Rivera

When Briam entered his senior year in high school he expected nothing less than graduating and fulfilling his dream of being accepted in the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez.  Although Briam was an excellent student he was a bit of a class clown and one day he got in serious trouble at school and his English teacher at the time said that he would not graduate from high school for misbehaving so much and would turn out to be but a bitter bum.

Although sadden and a bit discouraged by what others thought of him, Briam didn’t let anyone tell him what he could or couldn’t do. Briam was determined to prove everyone wrong.

Briam spent most of his life in Aguada, where his high school was also located, and managed to learn to speak English quite well despite having mediocre teachers.

He might seem like a calm and quiet kid walking around listening to his favorite music with his big headphones but inside lays a fun but prankish guy.  Briam used his teachers’ words to help inspire him to become a better person in life by proving his teacher that he could be whatever he put his mind into.

Soon enough, in 2009, Briam went on to graduate from his high school with a 4.00 GPA.  In that same year Briam was accepted at the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez, something he had always wanted to achieve.

Briam full of joy in his graduation, enjoying his last days as a high school student. Briam was eager to start his new journey as a student in the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez.

He is in his third year in college and plans to continue his baccalaureate in Biology in order to study medicine in the United States, and then come back to his cherished island.

“Believe it or not, my teacher helped me… she inspired me to prove her wrong…”
