By: Jorge Figueroa

It’s another weekend in the Animal Shelter in Mayagüez and the Bus arrives with 15 new kittens. Everyone mobilizes to welcome these homeless adorations. But to get them ready to adoption a process is needed. First to prepare the bathtubs for a good cleaning and the first doses of vaccination to secure a good health while they stay in the shelter.

Everything looks organized and work properly but this is because Dr. Rodriguez is in charge to maintain not even cats also dogs.

“Bring the kittens to the cages and lets make sure they have no wounds” says the Veterinarian before give the bath to make sure the kitties don’t need a surgery or a special medication.

“Now please bring me the anti-flicks and thick shampoo the warm water and the towels” reply Dr. Rodriguez with a kind voice.

Dr. Rodriguez have a Ph. D in animal medicine from the “Central University” in Dominican Republic.

Since she was young, animals were her passion, she starts as a volunteer of the shelter and that love for the animals, pursue her to turn it into her profession. Since she was young, Alexandra was always take care on abandoned animals taking them to the shelter that was near her house in Mayagüez , giving them baths and food, and unconsciously learning about animal health.

“In that time there was the beginning of the shelter and the only manage to have veterinarian technicians because the Organization (APAYPA) that is the one that managed the Shelter since it opens in 1984, wasn’t well developed but the problems of abandoned animals in the town was so big that everyone who workers here even the volunteers like me back then didn’t give up because it was our duty with society and even more with the abandoned animal” related the doctors while cleaning the kittens.

Dr. Rodriguez is in the top of her career she works on Villa Michelle Shelter in Mayagüez also had, a low cost vaccination ambulant clinic in the west of the island and recently create a pet grooming home service.

“As part of my job I have to make sure that community love their own pets and also animals in general I also volunteer here in the shelter to educate the community of how to take care of their pets, but part of my job here is to vaccinate, clean and find a home to most of the animals also to castrate the animals” Says the Veterinarian.

But not everything is joyful and happiness in Dr. Rodriguez job. She told me, once a cat was found near the shelter by one of the cleaning workers, the cat was pretty bad injured and she was about to giving birth and was fighting for her life.

“It was really sad; I saw in the eyes of the cat that she wants to save her kitties, so I did everything that was in my hands and in my knowledge to save the kitties and the mom but after giving birth the last of the kitten she died”.  Reply Dr. Rodriguez with a plug in her throat.

“I’m really aware that Dr. Rodriguez have a strong passion to animals, that afternoon when the cat dies everyone was really concerned because she fight to give birth to all of the kitties but Dr. Rodriguez was strong but with sadness in her eyes it was really shocking for her how the maternal instincts of the cat make the cat sacrifice for the kittens” says Martha a veterinary technicians of the shelter and Co-worker of Dr. Rodríguez.

“She is very responsible with what she do. Every animal is like her own baby” says Gabriel one of many volunteers in the shelter.

Villa Michelle Shelter is where our “Heroe” develope more of her skills, charisma and courage and is she the place in which enjoy her job the most. The shelter organized various community activities; the “Sato Day” is the one that Dr. Rodriguez love more so far. Like the “Sato Day” that is the one the Dr. Rodríguez enjoy the most.

“I know I was born to this, this is my passion and as long I can save animals and helps society with the animal control problem. I will be there helping animals to be happy in this world.”Says Dr. Rodríguez really excited.
